The Range Extender works as a power bank (portable charger) for the main battery installed on your Hybrid bike. On MAHLE X35 and X35 + systems, only the main battery supplies power to the engine, while the Range Extender charges the main battery.
Charging is done independently of the power demand by the motor (speeds greater than 25 km / h, bike stopped or no pedaling).
The Range Extender has a discharge ratio of 1.9A, while the motor can instantly draw up to 9A. It is therefore obvious that the Range Extender cannot supply power to the engine independently without going through the main battery. We recommend using the Range Extender always connected to the main battery, at the charging point, ensuring the main battery is charged during use.
With heavy battery use at peak assist and for long periods of time, the main battery may discharge much faster compared to the Range Extender's recharge rate; in this case, it will be necessary to wait for the Range Extender to recharge the main battery to a level which will reactivate the electric assistance.
Start-up:
After connecting the Range Extender to the charging point, press the IWOC button located on the top of the device. At the same time, the iWOC button located on the top tube of the bicycle will start flashing with the color indicative of the charge level of the main battery, as for a usual battery charge with the charger. The bike operates normally and the assistance levels can be changed as if the Range Extender was not connected. To ensure the highest level of battery life, the Range Extender should be connected to the main battery from the start, so that there is sufficient time to fully charge.
Stopping: To stop the Range Extender, press the button on the top of the device for 3 seconds.
Charge:
The Range Extender can be charged independently or in series with the main battery.
To charge it independently, simply connect the X35 battery charger to the charging port on the top of the device.
To charge it in series with the main battery, connect the Range Extender to the bike through the charging point and then connect the battery charger to the Range Extender at its charging point.
The charge level of the Range Extender can be viewed by looking at the iWOC color shown on the top of the battery. Alternatively, it is possible to display the charge level of the Range Extender through the dedicated Ebikemotion smartphone application.
